#06 Heirloom Organic Vegetable Garden: Seed Germination 2nd Week & Scarecrow

heirloom fruit seedsOk, it’s been our 2nd week since we planted and this week on Tuesday we planted the rest of our heirloom beans, peas, and more romaine lettuce.

We repaired the damage from the raid from the crows transplanting what was left of the corn and it didn’t effect the crow at all.

Built a permanent scarecrow which turned really good, used an old 20 litre plastic pail for the body and a plastic bathroom garbage can for the head dressed him up.

It is fooling the crows & even deer flies and it is driving the dogs absolutely nuts every morning when they first come out of the house, really stupid dogs but I love’em!.

Got a ton of rain did some wash out damage but not serious at all.

Are heirloom seeds a waste of time, or a necessary prep?

heirloom vegetable seedsIt’s important to understand the difference between hybrid and GMO. While Heirloom seeds are not a waste of time, there is nothing wrong with using hybrid seeds from the store, and most people will get way better results with hybrid seeds. Stocking some heirloom seeds is not a bad idea, and I have some myself. But worrying about being able to harvest usable seeds from your 10th generation of crops may be getting a little ahead of yourself when it comes to your preparations, so keep that in mind.

#05 Heirloom Organic Vegetable Garden: Seed Germination First Week & Crows Birds

heirloom fruit seedsIt’s been a week since we put our Heirloom Organic seeds in the ground, and it’s been a good week and a bad one also.

The good news first is we had absolutely fantastic success with the germination of the seeds, the Heirloom strains are very strong and came up very fast in the 2nd or 3rd day we had a complete row of Rutabaga came up with the Broccoli came up the next day.

The only ones that haven’t shown anything is the carrots and parsnips as of Sunday night.

And now the bad news Mother Nature has shown us we are not alone, the crows have decided our garden is the perfect place for a snack, they have eaten over 3-5 rows of corn so far and more than likely the damage is greater than we can see right now. Will know more this week as the rest of the corn finally comes up and we can see the complete damage. Looks like we are going to have to transplant the surviving corn close to each other and plant some more seeds.

Came home on Saturday around noon and 2 crows where in the garden pulling our potatoes out of the ground one flew away with a potato and the other one dropped theirs and left.

Installed Aluminum pie plates on strings and our only available version of a scarecrow we could come up with on such short notice an old blow up sex doll that was laying around in my garage from a party joke from years ago, she is call Wicked Wendy from our old adult department in our retail store.
