Purplette Onions

onions  onions

These flavorful specialty onions mature early and hold well. Purplette is a glossy rich burgundy, transforming to a nice pastel pink when cooked or pickled. Can be harvested at golf ball size or very young as baby bunching onions with purple pearl ends.  60 Days to maturity.

Sow onion seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2-4 seeds per inch, in rows 12-24 inches apart. Days to emergence: 6-16. Optimum soil temperature for germination: 55-75°F. Thin bulbing onions to 5-7 inches between plants and bunching onions to 2 inches between plants.

For transplants, sow up to 100 seeds in a sterile seedling mix in a 4-6 inch pot. Cover the seeds to a depth of 1/8 inch. Place in a warm location and keep moist. If the tops reach over 5 inches before you transplant, cut to 3 inches high. When planting out, take the clump and separate the grass-like seedlings and place in a shallow trench, 2-7 inches apart. Fill the trench around the seedlings and then water. Onion seedlings are tough and will perform amazingly well.
